What makes up a defrost system?
A heater near the coil melts the frost. A thermostat or sensor ends the melt once the coil has warmed. A timer or the control board decides when the next melt begins. On Viking’s built-in side-by-sides, the part that ends the melt is a defrost terminator, a bimetal switch (two metals bonded together that bend as the temperature changes), and the melt water collects in a pan behind the lower access panel, where a small heater evaporates it.
Why is the drain part of the same visit?
Melt water that cannot get away freezes where it sits. Fit a new heater and leave a blocked drain behind, and the water or ice is back within days. Clearing the coil and the drain path is what makes the repair hold.
When is it not the defrost system?
Frost gathered only near the door usually comes from a seal letting damp air in. That is a gasket job, priced on its own.
